LANTING KUN
OPERA
TROUPE
Founded in 2005, Lanting Kun Opera Troupe was named in honor of Taiwan’s renowned late Peking-Kun actress Kao Huei-Lan; founder of “Lanting Art Studio”.
Our mission is to utilize Taiwan’s unique position and perspective within the Chinese cultural family, to unite the Kun elites both at home and overseas, and to make connections between this old classical art form and the contemporary life’s emotional experiences, so doing to carry out Kun opera’s multi-dimensional developments in Taiwan. Lanting is unequivocally regarded as the most outstanding professional Kun Opera group in Taiwan! And our honorary artist-in-residence: Wen Yu-Heng is in the pinnacle among the middle-aged generation international Kun artist circle.
Lanting has produced and revised several classic Kunqu plays: Classic Comedy <The Roaring Lioness>, Neo-Classical Kun Opera <Quest for the Garden Saunter &the Interrupted Dream> (Historical site & Theater versions), Faces of Variety in Kun-Sheng’s (male roles) Performing Art <Six Legends of Lanting>, New Melody from the National Palace Museum <Palace of Eternity >, Faces of Variety in Kun-Dan’s (female Roles) Performing Art <Six Legends of Lanting , Part II>, Classical Romance <The Legend of Jade Pin>, <Re-Encountering the Variety in Kun-Sheng’s Performing Art>, <Peony Pavilion in Motion>…etc. Not only performing professionally all over Taiwan, Lanting was invited many times internationally to participate with international touring performances, lectures and conferences in Su-Chow, Beijing, and Nanking, China, New York, USA, Hong Kong, and Macao, and received universal critical acclaim both domestically and overseas.
Besides performing in traditional theaters, Lanting also promotes the concept of performing at new venues outside of theater setting by combining Kun Opera with Historical sites, Cultural relic of the National Palace Museum in Taipei, and Traditional Literati Arts (Lute, Chess, Calligraphy and Painting). One of the highlights was in 2015 when Lanting integrated Kun Opera, Ink-painting, Digital art and together with Modern Theater Elites to create <Peony Pavilion in Motion>; a virtual Kun Opera Theater stage setting. Our brilliant professional performances have won the title of “Taipei Outstanding Performing Arts Teams” by Taipei City’s culture bureau four times; in 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016 Lanting was chosen as one of the teams that receives sponsorship from the Culture Department of the National government.
In order to deepen the professional talent pool and to promote and cultivate audiences for this classical art, Lanting actively engages in publishing educational materials of the Contemporary Kun Opera ; leaving a legacy for the future generations to come. Through these years’ effort Lanting has won the honor of being in among the finalists ten times and has been awarded the “Golden Melody Award” two times.
Lanting continues to follow its founding principles steadfastly; to carry and promote the classic Kun opera highlights/acts, to organize, revise and edit contemporary Kun opera plays, to participate in cross art dialogues, to promote situational and environmentally new theater setting concepts, so as to channel a brand new artistic energy for Taiwan’s Kun Opera!
